“It’s alright,” the doctor said, his voice soft but steady. “I know this can be unsettling, but you’re in control here. You can examine me first if you like. There’s nothing to be afraid of.” He pulled a chair closer, gesturing for the patient to sit. “We’ll go slowly, together, and I can tell you to stop at any time.”
The apartment was still full of the comfortable clutter of a morning spent together, books on the table and glasses by the window. “One more time before you go,” he said, his voice barely a whisper. The guest ran a hand through his hair, a small, nervous gesture. For a moment, neither of them moved.
Long after the last echo of the crowd had faded, the lights remained. The public performance was over, but the real show was about to begin. No one was there to watch as the silent, unscripted moment unfolded between them, a quiet performance just for two.
