The fire crackled, sending sparks into the silent dark. He didn’t speak much, just watched the flames dance… After a long while, his gaze shifted from the fire to me. He raised a gnarled hand, not in greeting, but as a slow, patient offering. “Give me your hand,” he said, his voice a dry whisper like rustling leaves. “Give me a hand to give you something.”
